Nationwide esports championship in search of Malaysia’s Top Esports Stars
Kuala Lumpur, 29th January 2019 – Media Prima Digital and Celcom Axiata Berhad today unveiled XPAX Kejohanan E-Sukan Kampus (KEK) 2019, Malaysia’s first esports championship that will showcase local talent from top higher learning institutes esports teams, and compete for the cash prize pool of RM 180,000.
Organised by MyGameOn, in collaboration with their esports partner Kitamen, the event will be held in five different zones all over the nation. The grand cash prize is up for grab for all participants in three different game categories: Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 and DOTA 2.
The championship will begin in February with the online qualifier round and teams will battle it out to secure a spot in the Top 16. The qualifying teams for each game in each zone will go head to head in the zone final held in March.
Winners from each zone will then compete for the grand final title and grand cash prize at the end of April in Kuala Lumpur. The campus with the most winning teams will also stand a chance to receive a scholarship worth RM50,000, brought by Celcom’s leading youth brand, XPAX, as part of its eSports empowerment initiative. Apart from XPAX, Predator is also the official partner of KEK.
Media Prima Digital CEO Rafiq Razali said, “Media Prima Digital is committed to the continuous development and growth of esports in Malaysia and that is why we came out with KEK. This would be a good opportunity for the gaming industry as major brands like XPAX come together to grow and support esports within higher learning institutes and to give grassroot gamers equal opportunities as their peers in the Klang Valley. We’re happy to actively encourage the esports industry through various initiatives under our gaming portal, MyGameOn and with KEK, we hope to educate over 1 million students from all higher learning institutes throughout the country on healthy gaming, and the potential this industry will have for their future career.”
As esports is now a medal sport in the upcoming SEA Games, XPAX, as the official catalyst of KEK, believes that this tournament will accelerate the esports and gaming industry in Southeast Asia. After assembling their own esports team early this year, the XPAX X-ASSINS, XPAX’s involvement in KEK aims to nurture local talents to become future professional esports athletes.
Danny Chew, Chief Consumer and Home Business Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad, said, “XPAX by Celcom is thrilled to present KEK, as it aligns with our aspiration to become the provider of choice in gratifying esports enthusiasts and our customers’ digital lifestyle. It also provides Malaysian youths with a platform of empowerment where they can hone their skills and make their mark in the gaming world.”
The esports tournament will also instill the element of education during the zone finals by featuring career exhibitions, educational booths, industrial talks and sharing sessions, food trucks, fitness activations and many more. Students who are passionate in esports and gaming can look forward to more activities and opportunities in this broad industry throughout the finals. Another exciting part of KEK is the XPAX HACKATHON where students will be given a chance to pitch their idea to the organising committee for a chance to win exclusive prizes from XPAX. As for now, KEK will be held in few higher learning institutes including Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
The KEK schedule is as follows:
